Cafe Berlin

Karthik and I don’t really go to upscale restaurants but our anniversary was a few weeks ago and we had a coupon to use up (of course). We went to Cafe Berlin which is right near Union Station. As soon as you walk inside you feel like you are in a different country. Our waitress checked on the vegetarian-ness of items which was great but the food was quite a let down.

The meal started off well with bread accompanied by chive infused butter, and potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream that were a little heavy but still delicious.

We ordered a spinach salad with candied walnuts and homemade honey mustard dressing that was overly sweet. The walnuts had a candy shell that was bigger than the walnut itself and the honey mustard dressing just made the whole dish sweet through and through.

They had one vegetarian entree which was a grilled portobello mushroom with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. What it actually turned out to be was a mushy mushroom under liquidy mashed potatoes and unseasoned greens. The whole dish tasted mushy and it had no texture and no flavor. We were really disappointed with this dish. The only good thing was the slightly salty cheese on top.

In conclusion, Karthik and I think our palates are used to a certain level of flavor and spice and this just didn’t cut it. The atmosphere was great but the food was not.

Our total bill was approximately $50 for a beer, potato pancakes, spinach salad, portabello entree, and slice of cheesecake. Thank goodness we had a coupon.
